How the Digital SAT is structured

The Digital SAT replaced the paper SAT for US students in March 2024. It is shorter, fully adaptive, and taken on a computer or tablet using the College Board's Bluebook application. The test has two sections — Reading & Writing and Math — each divided into two modules.

SectionModule 1Module 2Total
Reading & Writing27 questions · 32 min27 questions · 32 min54 questions · 64 min
Math22 questions · 35 min22 questions · 35 min44 questions · 70 min

How adaptive testing works

Unlike traditional tests, the Digital SAT adapts at the module level. Everyone takes the same Module 1. Based on your Module 1 score, you are routed to either an easier or harder Module 2.

  • Strong Module 1 performance routes you to the hard Module 2, where top scores (750–800) are accessible.
  • Weaker Module 1 performance routes you to the easy Module 2, where scores are capped below 600.

This means your Module 1 performance is critical. GeniusPreps replicates this routing in every practice test so you experience the same adaptive logic as the real exam.

Frequently asked questions

How many practice tests should I take?

Most students benefit from 4–6 full-length practice tests spread over 8–12 weeks. More important than quantity is reviewing every wrong answer to understand the mistake before moving on.

How accurate are the scores?

GeniusPreps uses an approximation model that mirrors the College Board's adaptive scoring logic. Scores are estimates useful for tracking progress — they should not be compared directly to official College Board results.

Can I use a calculator?

On the Digital SAT, the Desmos graphing calculator is available for the entire Math section. GeniusPreps includes the Desmos embed in all Math modules.
